This project is concerned with the restoration and conversion of an extremely attractive group of semi-derelict hospital buildings in the heart of Minehead, in order to form a much needed community hub together with a small element of residential content.
The site was acquired by its owners in May 2015 as an investment but with the additional aims of restoring the site to and bringing it back to community use. |
The site as a whole is grade 2 listed, primarily because of the presence of three good quality “Heritage” buildings, even though, unfortunately, they have been badly adapted and the space between them poorly “infilled” at ground level in recent decades.
The original purpose of the principal building on the site (built in 1888) was to be the Minehead Town Assembly Rooms and council offices but in 1910 it was converted to become a branch bank and managers flat. In about 1915 its use changed again to become a hospital
The long term project objective is to create a high quality, long term sustainable community “hub”, providing flexible and adaptable space to host a variety of community activities, functions and services, together with four residential apartments for the affordable letting market.
The building aspects of this project will be achieved by very sensitive and sympathetic restoration of the heritage parts of the site to their original “assembly rooms” format. The implementation aspects will be achieved by either teaming up with, or creating, a locally based community “delivery” group
The building work to the hub areas will be carried out in six discrete phases so that parts of the site may be brought back into use in the shortest possible time and in an orderly/ progressive manner. The work to the apartments will be to a separate programme and are effectively a completely separate project.
